Choosing growth over protection is FUN!
Cognitive Hypnotherapy follows a core theme that we are usually inhabiting one of two biological states. Either we are in various states of protection, living in a challenging and potentially hazardous world in which we need to protect ourselves. Or, we see the world as place in which we can learn, thrive and grow. Cognitive Hypnotherapy aims to guide you from one unhelpful state to one of growth and possibility.
Living in a state of protection limits everything we do - our relationships, our work, our health – in fact, every goal, dream and decision ends up being coloured by this limited viewpoint. If some-one is constantly primed for attack or disappointment, all their actions will be taken with this thought in mind. Often, people do not even know this is their instinctive way of being. A sure sign is when some-one does not like themselves and they find it nearly impossible just to have ‘fun’ being them. Also, the external world becomes to blame for all the difficulty that inevitably arises along the way.
While aiming for fun in life might seem a trite goal, if we are having fun being who we are, we enrich all those around us and make decisions and plans that will best serve us, whoever we are. You may recognise the term ‘growth mindset’ over a fixed one and the idea is very similar. The growth mindset brings with it the all-important resilience needed to face life’s challenges.
Achieving this state however can be a difficult road and the therapeutic approach taken through Cognitive Hypnotherapy will uncover where the main roadblocks are hidden, usually as a result of our own childhoods. By accessing these memories and learnings from our early years hidden deep in our unconscious minds, we can start to reframe, update and change our approach to life.
Trevor Silvester is the founder of the Quest Institute where I trained. His book 'Grow' is a great read and brilliantly explains how important is to be living in growth. Buy a copy of his book here https://www.questinstitute.co.uk/products-downloads/
I love Trevor’s letter to young people in the book – here’s his list of 7 things he wants young people to know that we could all benefit from keeping in mind, namely:
1. Bad things are going to happen to you
2. You feed what you focus on
3. Sometimes your fears don’t matter
4. You get the future you expect
5. Nobody is worth knowing who thinks what you wear matters
6. Sometimes what others try and teach you is because of their own stuff
7. You’re writing your life story. Be the character in it you want to be.
If you feel you might be more in protection than growth, seek out some Cognitive Hypnotherapy and enjoy uncovering some major insights and making some life-enhancing changes.
