Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be hypnotised and lose control?
There is no need to be put off by the idea of being ‘hypnotised’. You will be in complete control at all times. I use a naturally relaxed trance state to access your subconscious mind – it’s not at all weird, scary or anything like the stage hypnotherapists that you may have seen. In each therapy session you need only come ready to relax, explore the workings of your unconscious mind and be open to making some significant changes to your life.
Who can be helped help?
Cognitive Hypnotherapy can be beneficial for many problems and issues. People with more extreme mental health issues may not be treated without the proper consent of a medical practitioner and only if considered entirely safe to do so.
I can treat young people and am Advanced DBS checked.
How many sessions will be needed?
This form of therapy is not about a quick fix though life-changing results can often happen after just a few sessions. The therapeutic process is about uncovering and changing long-term, deep-seated beliefs that sit in your unconscious mind which might be working against you. The aim is for lasting change not short-term gain and this may take more time. Unlike with some therapies however, Cognitive Hypnotherapy is not designed to take years and endless week in week out sessions.
You may find after a few sessions, you can do some work by yourself and return at a later date for a refresh or to build on your learnings. Or, you may find you find help with one problem means other problems rise up to the surface and the process may take longer. Ultimately, success will be down to your own commitment to the process and the ability of us to work openly with one another.
What is hypnosis?
Cognitive Hypnotherapy uses a natural state of trance-guided relaxation with intense concentration to achieve a heightened state of awareness that is sometimes called a trance. It is in the trance state that a person may be more susceptible to suggestion and more able to access their unconscious mind.
Can anyone be put into trance?
Yes. While some people find it easier to relax than others, everyone has the ability to let their unconscious mind come to the surface by simply relaxing. Contrary to popular belief, you are in complete control during this type of therapy and cannot be made to do or say anything that you don’t want to. Your responsiveness is also related to having the right therapist as you need to feel comfortable and safe. The process works best if you submerge yourself in the experience and go with the flow.
What can hypnotherapy help with?
Hypnotherapy can help so many problems. These can typically include:
Anxiety/stress/depression/low mood
Relationship breakdown / family problems
Loneliness
Insomnia
Grief
Unwanted habits and phobias (smoking, nail-biting, flying)
Lack of confidence
Exams, interviews and public speaking
Pre and post maternity / menopause / midlife crisis
OCD / ADHD
It can also be beneficial to help in times of overall stress and decision-making when you find yourself at one of life’s crossroads. You may still be struggling following the Covid-19 epidemic and find yourself needing some help getting back out into the world.
